A Dramatic Day Of Footy at Oak Street
The U/19s kicked off at 9.20am at Oak St, same time as the Senior Women’s team at Parkdale, and both teams, like all other Beauy sides, observed a pre-match minute’s silence in the middle of the ground to remember Holly & Bianca while wearing the double black armbands. The Women’s B Grade team were really fired up and they recorded a 100-point win against the Parkdale Vultures while the Women’s Div 4 team received four points after Old Xavs forfeited.
The picture above shows the Senior Sharks and Tigers together prior to their match.
Hard to think of a more closely contested day of footy than the three thrillers played at Oak Street in front of a large and excited crowd.
It started off with the U/19 Div 1 game against Old Carey undergoing some noticeable momentum shifts as Carey raced to an 8 goal to 2 goal lead before the Sharks kicked the next seven to hit the front. Then Carey kicked four to again hold the lead before Beauy kicked a late one to finish just short:
12.8 80 to 10.16 76 with the Sharks having six more scoring shots but still falling short.
Then the Reserves started the season off with a frustrating 9.6 to 9.6 draw against St.Bedes/Mentone after having been 7 points in front with three minutes to play. Two points on the board but disappointing not to get the four points after leading for most of the game.
The main game followed on from a very successful luncheon featuring the “Two Robbo’s” and by 2.00pm there was a large crew of supporters behind each club who were enjoying a sunny day and an enthralling contest. There was never more than a kick or two in the scores but in the end, it was Mentone’s better disposal around the ground and more accurate goal kicking that saw them finish four points in front, although the Sharks had seven more scoring shots.
Beauy 11.14 80 – St.Bedes/Mentone 13.5 83
The U/19 Div 4 team had a strong, ten-goal away win against UHS-VU: 16.20 116 to 6.3 39
The Youth Reserves team played on Friday night at Oak St and went down by 87 points: 6.5 41 to 19.14 128
Our seven VAFA teams had a real break-even weekend with 3 ½ wins and 3 ½ losses: can’t get more even than that.
Just be aware that for next weekend the original venue for the Seniors & Reserves games against Glen Eira/Mckinnon was Packer Park, Carnegie, but it is now the East Caulfield Reserve, East Caulfield (On Dandenong Rd, near the Monash Caulfield campus.)
