Their hairlines may have receded and their pants gone up a few sizes, but today is a special occasion for this particular group of Senior players.
The Class of 2013, coached by Jason Mifsud and captained by Tom Dean were our first Senior Team to play in the VAFA Premier Division and the only team not aligned with a school.
As will be the case this season, our first game in the top flight matched us up against local rivals, St.Bedes/Mentone. In a hard fought and even contest, we held a slight 5 point lead at half time. Not sure what the coach said at the break but it certainly did the trick with the Sharks banging on 11 goals 10 behinds, to 2 behinds in the third term.
A further six goals to nil in the last recorded an 121 point win and top spot on the table. Lachie Boyd bagged 8 goals and Tom Abbott four whilst Cal Buckley was adjudged Best on Ground. Best off Ground is open to debate but one things for sure, Oak Street was certainly heaving that night!!
A season of 7 wins and a draw had us finish in sixth spot, yet it was an indication that our best could mix it with the best the VAFA had to offer.
(In a peculiar twist of fate, St.Bedes/Mentone did recover to play off in the 2013 GF - ultimately losing to Old Xaverians by 50 points.)
I’m sure all in attendance today and tonight will have many fond stories of 2013, even if some may be very much embellished as the day unfolds
