On behalf of the Beaumaris Past Players, Officials and Supporters Group and the broader Beaumaris Football Community we would like to pass on our condolonces to the family of Ray Austin who passed away on Friday 8 May, 2026.
Ray was a popular and wonderful servant of the Beaumaris Football Club.
He served as President in 1983 and Treasurer in 1980 & 1981.
He also team managed a number of sides during his time at Beaumaris and was a true football supporter.
During this time he oversaw a successful period of on field performance by the Sharks, with the Senior team finishing Runners Up in 1980, 3rd in 1981 and 1983 and 8th in 1982.
It was during this period that the neighbouring Federal Football League folded and the SESFL expanded with an influx of ex Federal League clubs and players, changing the dynamic of the SESFL for years to come.
Ray was a proud and passionate Melbourne supporter. Ray worked in the automotive industry with most of the car companies at that time.
In true Melbourne and Beaumaris tradition Ray is remembered most for his time at Volvo, as many can picture Ray in early Volvo merchandise watching from the sidelines. He was also instrumental in gaining a sponsorship with Volvo during his time at the club, which kept the club afloat during tough times and was a forerunner to many similar sponsorships over the subsequent years.
Ray is survived by his wife Yvette and children Jenni, Matt and Deb.
Jenni and Matt can remember spending days at the football club and were often called upon to clean out the changerooms after matches on the promise of a packet of Juicy Fruit each !
