The dry statistics above do not properly reflect the impact Stan made at the Beauy Sharks after his fellow Life Member and life-long mate, John Lolas, recruited him to Beauy from Edithvale-Aspendale, where he grew up with his close friend, Stan Alves. Stan brought a very passionate and positive energy to the club and threw himself into every aspect of the club's activities. He was a quick, dashing winger who was soon known as the 'Golden Greek', by friend and foe alike, and he warmed to that moniker. Then, with his insurance business going well, he also became one of the club's first player/sponsors before also getting involved in the Junior Coaching ranks which led to a Premiership with the 1977 U/13 team Captained by Barclay Nettlefold - the recent head of Swimming Australia. Later on, he helped bring Melbourne & Nth Melbourne legend, Stan Alves, to the club as a Guest Speaker for a Life Member's Dinner and then in 2003 to help with the winning Premiership campaign when Stan A took training and then talked to the players at a later Team Dinner.
Stan loved being an integral part of the Reserves' 'Golden Era', when Premierships were won in '72, 73, '74, '76 & '77, with the '75 team only going down by a goal: Stan was part of the '77 squad but missed playing that day as he was busy coaching the U/13's to a Grand Final victory at another ground. He was passionate about all things BFC and was heavily involved in the club's social calendar at a time when the Sharks had a reputation for putting on terrific functions and social activities. Some of us will remember the BFC Dinner-Dance at the function centre at 9 Darling St South Yarra that was followed by Stan transporting a car-load of Sharks in his yellow convertible - SG333 - down to Lorne for a 1.00am coffee at the iconic surfers' cafe - The Arab. Life was never boring with Stan around in those days. Then he came along one day with his lovely wife-to-be, Kathy, and became a devoted family man with a son and daughter, Alexi & Sophie, and Grandkids, Lily & Lucas.
Most importantly, Stan always had a friendly smile for anyone he met at the Beauy Footy Club, and he was always willing to put his hand up and "Have A Go'. He loved mixing with people and made many friends over his six decades as a loyal participant and supporter and was in good spirits when attending last year's Grand Final day.
He is also remembered for 'Having A Go' with the sport of surfing and in 1966 he qualified for the heats of the Bells Beach Surfing Contest and then later on he joined the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club and gained his bronze in 1974 before becoming enthusiastically involved in that club's activities with several other Beauy Sharks.
We pass on our condolences to Kathy, Alexi, Sophie and their families and acknowledge the passing of a Legendary Shark who brightened the lives of his many friends at the club with his energetic, positive attitude.
