Mother of four: Greg, Mal, Trudy & Leonie: Grandmother of nine.
Son Mal was a Dual BFC Club Champion - ‘77 & ’85: and a Saint in ’82.
Grandchildren included Nick Smith - Sydney Swans 200 game, All-Australian Champion.
Col & Bev Smith moved into their Tibbles Street, Beaumaris home in 1959, the same year that second son, Mal, was born, and with oldest son, Greg, already in tow.
Little could they have known that, after arriving in a still undeveloped suburb with many unmade roads, vacant paddocks and no football club yet in existence, their family would come to play an important role in the new Beauy Sharks Football Club that would be formed in 1963 and that through their involvement the family would become much loved and highly respected members of the Sharks' Family and the wider Beaumaris Community.
The Smith family involvement really took off when Mal found himself in a very talented U/13 team in 1972 that won one of the Sharks early Junior Premierships under Senior Premiership player, Marty Harris. This team included four future VFL/AFL players, Mick Roberts, Mick Nettlefold, Andy Moir and Mal himself, plus other Beauy identities such as Stuie Mackinnon, triple Club Champion, Tom McNicholas, Leigh Parker, Chris 'C.J'. Dennis and 'The Mayor' - Bryce Gardiner.
Col became involved as a team official during those boys' ensuing Junior years at the Sharks with Bev as an ardent supporter. Mal, Robbo & Netters all came up from the U/17's to play Senior footy in 1977 with the Sharks, and were part of the Club's first Senior/Reserves Premiership double with Mal winning his first Senior B & F as an 18 y.o. before returning to win his second in 1985 after a stint at the Saints.
Then in late 1986 Col took on the President's role for the Sharks and Bev supported him and the club by volunteering to fill the Treasurer's position in 1987 & 1988. This was a great commitment from the family to show their appreciation of what the club had meant to them and they earned the respect of all members of the club for their dedication and hard work.
In her later years Bev had the pleasure of turning on the TV most weekends and watching her Grandson, Nick, as he carved out a long and successful career with the Swans but her own personal pleasure came from her twice weekly games of golf with friends at the Cheltenham Golf Club - a practice she kept up well into her 80's. It is obvious that she passed on some strong genes to the next generations.
We pass on our condolences to Greg, Mal, Trudy & Leonie and their families and acknowledge the passing of a wonderful lady who will be remembered very fondly by her many friends from the Beauy Football Club.
