U18 Girls Freeze Out Mordy to Win GF

The Under 18 Girl Sharks kept their cool in the late afternoon freeze at Koornang Park last Sunday to win the Grand Final.

The Girls maintained their late season surge by winning the U18 Div 2 Girls Premiership. In polar weather conditions the girls defeated top of the ladder team Mordy Brae 4.9-33 to 2.0-12.

Mordy Brae lost only 3 games all season, all to us - 1 regular season and 2 finals. That said, they’re a very good side deserved to be the No 1 ranked team going into the finals.

Prior to the game the ground copped a massive rain storm which had spectators running for cover at Koornang Park. As a result, the surface was very slippery and ball movement was going to be difficult. Importantly, our girls adopted well to unsavory playing conditions, and their skills were tremendous, despite the heavy ball and the wet and muddy surface.

It must be mentioned that during the season a number of these girls got to spend time playing in our Senior Womens team and there’s no doubt that Rosie Byrne, Ella Southgate, Caley Ryan, and the Stewart twins all benefited from the experience of Senior footy. It was great to see quite a number of the Senior girls at the game supporting their younger club mates.

It was very hard to pick better players when it was such a team effort, but mentions should go to Co Captains Rosie Byrne and Ella Southgate who were inspirational. So too were Steph Warmuz, Maddie Egan and our gun defenders Emily Hubbard and Anna Siemering. Poppy Ward defied her tender years with a superb game in the ruck and Charlotte Ryan, who was a deserved winner of the ‘Best on Ground’ umpires medal, was at her brilliant running best from her wing.

For many of the girls in this team, they will back up again next year in the U18s and for some others, they will progress to the Senior team. Whatever way you look at it, it’s a win-win for the Club.

Well done girls – this is a ground breaking achievement and will be recognised as such in the history of the club. You will also have a medal and a premiership you can cherish forever.

We also want to express our thanks to the under age girls who stepped up to help this team out during the season and as previously mentioned, those girls who supported our Senior team. Sharks working together.

Special mention to Coach Andrew Marriot, his assistant Brent Ward, Runner Rohan Byrne and Team Manager Bree Jones. Tremendous effort!
